In Bulgaria, the program welcomes students aged 16–18, who live with host families, attend local schools, and immerse themselves in everyday life. Students are placed in Bulgarian schools such as the 18th High School and the Sofia English Language School. Unlike traditional exchange formats, they can choose subjects based on their interests – Spanish in grade 10, philosophy in grade 11, or other electives. This flexibility encourages integration with peers and provides authentic access to the Bulgarian education system.
The students stand out for their maturity and motivation. Many of them demonstrate a strong sense of responsibility, actively invest in their personal development, and embrace cultural challenges with openness and curiosity.
Results and Impact
Over the years, around 25 students have studied Bulgarian with Kristina Progress through YES Abroad Bulgaria. Their journey usually begins with a short but intensive language immersion course (2–3 days), designed to help them adapt quickly. Afterwards, lessons continue weekly – and in some years even daily – depending on individual needs.
Key outcomes of the program include:

- Developing independence and social confidence – from buying groceries and managing documents to visiting a doctor.

Participants still learned Bulgarian, engaged with teachers, and prepared for their exchange experience virtually. This continuity illustrates the importance and long-term value of the partnership.
